Undersecretary of Defense testifies before Senate Armed Services Committee about growing terrorist capabilities.
On Tuesday, Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Colin Kahl stated before the Senate Armed Services Committee that ISIS-K may be capable of an attack on the U.S. in six months to a year. The Islamic State group based in Afghanistan has been assessed by intelligence to be a serious, though not imminent, threat.
The defense undersecretary said, “Both ISIS-K and al Qaeda have the intent to conduct external operations, including against the United States. But neither currently has the capability to do so.” He added, “For al Qaeda, it would take a year or two to reconstitute that capability. We have to remain vigilant against that possibility.”
